Lake Dillion

Dillion Reservoir is a large lake that was built over the old town of Dillion. The town moved to its present location before the impoundment was filled with water.

Dillion is a major water source for the city of Denver. It also provides citizens and visitors with recreational opportunities.

The trees on the far side of the top image shows the effects of the current infestation of Pine Beetles. The foliage has turned reddish brown and the trees that have this coloration are in the process of dying out.

The bottom image was taken near a location that was used by Ospreys off and on during recent times for nesting. The spot they picked is on the edge of a small island in the lake.

The principal diet of the Osprey is fish. Unlike most raptors the Osprey's talons are configured two in front and two in back. After they catch a fish they will adjust the catch so that it is facing into the wind for ease of transport to the place it will be consumed.
