Connor Branch

Anyone that has looked in the phone book in any major city in the United States knows there is a bunch of Connors. The particular segment of the Connor Clan that I have an interest in starts with James O'Connor emigrating to the state of Virginia from Ireland. In order to escape the prejudice of being Irish he dropped the "O" from his name. The line has continued as Connor to the present.

James as far as the research has been done (mostly by my great aunt and uncle) came from Ireland and lived in Caroline County, Virginia. He had at least one son, George.

George moved from Virginia to South Carolina, He had a number of children and was married to Anne Wolfork Garnet. One of his sons was John Wesley Connor. John Wesley was born in Cokesbury, South Carolina.

John Wesley grew up and in turn married Henrietta Mayson. Here is where the story starts to get really interesting. As for time frame Henrietta was born in 1805. Her father was Lt. Col. James Mayson. He fought in the revolutionary war in the south.

John Wesley would become a doctor and the family moved to Georgia. They were plantation owners and as mentioned he was a doctor. He had his share of vices. He apparently enjoyed gambling and grew to love is liquor. The family story as related to me by my uncle goes like this: As a doctor in a remote area he was frequently paid in ways other than money. One such way was with kegs of whiskey. Over time John became and alcoholic. John got drunk one Christmas Eve and gambled away the plantaion.  It was too much for him to bear and we hung himself from a tree on the plantation after setting the house to the torch.

This marks the first of many trials that Henrietta will go through.
