Pawnee Buttes are a part of the White River Badlands formation. These formations stretch across parts of Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota.

Pawnee Buttes are located near Grover, Colorado. They are made up of Sandstone and are major breeding areas for birds of prey. In fact on our visit here on 11/25/2006 we were blessed with sighting a Prairie Falcon on the Western Butte.

Major portions of the area are closed to exploration from March 1 through June 30 to allow the raptors to bring up their young undisturbed.

Many of the birds that reside here in the spring and summer have long since departed. However there were many Horned Larks about and the falcon that added to the interest and enjoyment of the sandstone formation that abound at this spot in Colorado.
